How to Wash & Care for Graphic Tees and Hoodies Without Fading

When you invest in high-quality streetwear, you want the sharp artwork, rich jet-black dyes, and plush cotton textures to last indefinitely. Yet, improper laundering remains the number one culprit behind faded colors, cracked screen prints, and shrunken collars.

Follow these essential rules from our textile care lab to keep your streetwear looking brand new for years.

1. The Non-Negotiable Rule: Turn Everything Inside Out

During a washing machine cycle, garments repeatedly rub against each other, zippers, buttons, and the metal drum. This mechanical abrasion degrades the surface fibers of graphic prints and accelerates pigment fading.

By simply turning your t-shirts and hoodies inside out before tossing them into the hamper, you shield the artwork and exterior fabric from direct friction.

2. Wash with Cold Water Only (30°C or Below)

Hot water is the mortal enemy of natural cotton fibers and screen printing inks:

It expands cotton knit fibers, causing permanent garment shrinkage.
It breaks down chemical bonds in plastic and water-based inks, leading to micro-cracking and peeling.
It strips dark dye molecules, turning your crisp black shirts into washed-out charcoal.

Cold water cleans modern fabrics just as effectively when paired with high-efficiency liquid detergents, while keeping the structural weave relaxed and intact.

3. Air Drying vs Machine Dryers

High-heat tumble dryers are responsible for up to 80% of garment wear-and-tear. The heat bakes and dehydrates natural fibers, resulting in fuzz, lint loss, and deformed collars.

The Best Approach: Hang your t-shirts on smooth wooden or padded hangers in an airy, shaded area. For heavy fleece hoodies, lay them flat on a drying rack so the weight of wet water doesn't stretch out the shoulder seams.

Avoid Direct Harsh Sunlight: While drying outdoors in Sri Lanka is fast and energy-free, intense ultraviolet sunlight acts as a natural bleaching agent. Always dry your dark clothes in the shade or with the inside turned out.

4. The Correct Way to Iron Graphic Tees

Never place a hot iron directly on screen-printed or rubberized artwork. The extreme heat will melt the ink onto your iron faceplate and permanently ruin the design.

Always iron the garment while still turned inside out.
If you need to iron the front side, place a clean sheet of baking parchment paper or a thin cotton handkerchief over the print before pressing.
Use medium heat with gentle steam rather than maximum dry heat.
